Writing Prompts: Time Travel and Future

I don't know about you guys, but I always love a good time travel story or movie. The Terminator series is personally my favorite and Doctor Who is the best series of the time travel genre. These stories add a unique twist to stories and leave you confused the second time you read it. This is the second list of writing prompts I have writing, with more to come in different genres.

  • A picture on your mantle unexpectedly falls and crashes to the floor. As you go to pick it up, you notice a note hidden behind the picture. The message is from the future - and is written by you. It instructs you to do something important.
  • A detective is assigned to a string of mysterious murders. They discover that the killer is a time traveler who won't be born for another 10 years.
  • You are an assassin. You don't use explosives, guns, or poison. You are a master of the butterfly effect.
  • Write a detailed guide on how to identify a time traveler.
  • You're a time-traveling biographer. You travel through time befriending historical figures to better understand them. However, you've gotten a little too close to your most recent subject.
  • A time traveler who can no longer remember what he came from.
  • "I was worried. You could have at least called." "I was stuck in the year 1472. How exactly did you expect me to do that?
  • You're a detective for the city police force. A dead body has been left at your station's steps. The body looks exactly like you.
  • After falling through time, you find yourself in the 1800s. You check your phone only to find that you have a wifi signal. The name of the network is "If you can see this, you need to hide".
  •  I know I'm getting close to finishing my time machine because I've caught several older versions of myself attempting to sabotage my lab.
  • You volunteer to be the first human to test time travel, only going an hour forward in time. When you step out of the travel pod, all humans are gone
  • When she said it was "in the fifties outside", she meant the nineteen-fifties.
  • All your life people have been staring at you, a lot of people, for a long time. One day, you realize all of them are time travelers who have come to see you.
  • When I was a little girl, I had an imaginary friend. When I grew up, I discovered it was me.
  • Yesterday, humanity figured out how to send objects back in time. Today, you receive a package from yourself.
  • When you were a child, you saw your parents get killed by a delusional man who claimed he was a time traveler. You just thought he was crazy, but as years past and you grow older, your best friend starts to look eerily similar to your parent's killer.
  • The person you loved has just reappeared after disappearing without a trace one year ago. Only. they've aged 20 years
  • Jokingly you say to your friend, "If either of us discovers time travel, the first place we visit is this moment." The second those words leave your mouth, what appears to be an older version of yourself rounds the corner, and he looks terrified.
  • A few hours after meeting a very curious stranger, she has finally convinced you she really is a time traveler. Sha asks where and when you are now, and when you answer, a look of horror spreads on her face. She says you have to get out of the country. Right now.
  • As a kid, you made a "time travel password" as a joke for if your future self ever tried to contact you. You had forgotten all about it until today - when you received an email with it as a subject line.
  • You travel back in time only to find that our history is a lie.
  • A group of time travelers have kidnapped you and taken you to the future because they want you to help them pass their exam for 21-century history.

Hope you can use these for the future *wink wink*
